New Bilingual Eco-Art Summer Day Camp

From 2010-08-16 to 2010-08-16

Les ARTerres, a new bilingual eco-art summer day camp, will run in Wakefield for two weeks this August, from Aug. 16 to 20, and Aug. 23 to 27. Canadian Parents for French - Quebec (CPF-Quebec) is sponsoring the camp, and Eco Echo is hosting it. The camp is for 6 - 12 year olds, and costs $175 ($150 for CPF members) for full days, or $100 ($75 for CPF members) for half days, and includes a CPF membership.

The camp, says its Director, Isabel Diaz Irias, "will teach children to learn, share and create art with an ecological focus, using natural, found and recycled material in small and large scale projects. It's an experiential program in which children can learn about gardening, the natural world, multidisciplinary eco-art - including visual, performance-based, music and writing - that engages the spirit of connectivity to the land and to every living thing."

"This camp is the perfect fit for what we're trying to accomplish at Eco Echo," says Eco Echo Vice-President Christopher Minnes. "We want to promote more ecological awareness through education and art events that inspire. I can't think of a better way to do that then through a camp like ARTerres."

CPF-Quebec is also pleased to be involved in the project. "The Outaouais is a region where many Anglophones and Francophones live side by side, yet many children could still use more help improving their second language," says CPF-Quebec Executive Director Lawrence Depoe. "ARTerres will bring the two communities together and expose them to their second language in a fun and safe setting. The kids won't be able to help but to learn some more of their second language, and come out of the experience motivated to learn even more."

All three organizations expect that this is just the beginning, and that this partnership will continue for many years to come - they are already planning a full season of camp offerings for next summer.

Full days of the camp run from 9am to 4pm; half days go from 9am to 12pm, or 1pm to 4pm. Childcare is available from 8am until 5:30pm each day for an additional cost.
