An English language group in partnership with the Regional Association of West Quebecers
The Gatineau Anglophone Writers’ Group is rooted in the belief that literature is vital to sustaining a vibrant culture, specifically the English-speaking community of West Quebec.
i. fostering the development of writers in their chosen discipline and/or genre.
ii. creating a positive interaction with other writers.
iii. creating an environment in which one’s writing can be heard and appreciated.
iv. inspiring, giving and gaining confidence, and further improving writing through peer evaluations and encouragement.
v. making writing fun.

March 23rd: Coffee Chats with The Honourable Greg Fergus, P.C., M.P Member of Parliament for Hull–Aylmer

The Honourable Greg Fergus, P.C., M.P, Member of Parliament for Hull–Aylmer, will join us on Thursday, March 23rd at 10:00 am for our Coffee Chats. Join the conversation!
Greg was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Hull–Aylmer in October 2015. In November 2021, he was appointed to the Privy Council as an advisor with a focus on emerging and prospective issues facing Canada. Since March 2021, Greg has also been Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, as well as Parliamentary Secretary to the President of Treasury Board. Greg previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Digital Government and to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development. He is a member of the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics, and previously served on the Standing Committee on Finance. Greg is the director of the Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association, vice-president of the Canada-Germany Interparliamentary Group, and co-chair of the CARICOM Friendship Group. He is a founding member of the Parliamentary Black Caucus, which he chaired until April 2022, and also chaired the Liberal Black Caucus during the same period. Greg has always actively participated in his community. He encourages people to get involved and to work together to fight isolation and build a sense of community. He enjoys organizing café-croissant meetings, public townhalls, and other community events throughout the Hull–Aylmer riding. Passionate about running, politics and jazz, he is proud of his community’s accomplishments, especially environmental sustainability (– or affordable housing?). Greg has a strong background in politics. Previously, he worked as a policy advisor and senior policy advisor in a number of ministerial offices. He also worked at all levels of the Liberal Party of Canada, including as National Director, where he introduced change and innovation that made operations and outreach stronger, helping restore it to today’s modern appeal.
He holds two bachelor’s degrees—in social sciences and in international relations, and has also undertaken graduate studies in the latter. Over the past 25 years, he has worked in the private, public, not-for-profit and academic sectors. Greg and his wife, Julie, are the proud parents of three adult children and doting grandparents to two grandsons.

Nicholas Salter, Executive Director, PERT
Nick is an experienced leader and strategist with expertise in communications, engagement, and public policy. Prior to directing the Provincial Employment Round Table, Nick helped launch and build McGill University’s Max Bell School of Public Policy. Before that, he worked in open government and open data as Director of Policy and Communications at Powered by Data. Nick has also been involved in federal politics — leading the team of a Member of Parliament and advising teams at a regional level. Nick’s involvement in the public, social, and nonprofit sectors dates to 2008. He has worked with foundations, boards, community organizations, the health care system, higher ed, and multiple levels of government. He holds an MSW in International and Community Development, a BA in Psychology, and a Graduate Certificate in PR. Nick is also a past fellow of the McGill Institute for Health and Social Policy.
Sta Kuzviwanza, Director of Policy & Research, PERT
Sta is a policy researcher and analyst with a background in economics and technology policy. Sta previously worked as the policy lead for Québec at Airbnb Canada and as a consultant providing policy analysis to organizations in the private and public sectors. She holds a Master of Public Policy from the Max Bell School of Public Policy and a Bachelor’s in Economics and African Studies from McGill University.
Cimminnee Holt, Policy Researcher, PERT
Cimminnee is a policy researcher and has a doctorate in Religions and Cultures from Concordia University. She is the recipient of multiple grants and awards for her innovative research on marginal new religious movements, and her research is published in peer-reviewed journals and books. Prior to joining PERT, she was a lecturer at Concordia, teaching classes on religion with special attention to evolving policies on religious accommodation in Canada and abroad.
Couponing Workshop

Join us for a Couponing Workshop Monday, March 27th from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Christ Church Hall in Aylmer (101 rue Symmes Gatineau, QC). The session will be led by Rachel O'Donnell.
Rachel is originally from Ireland and has lived in Aylmer for the past six years. As a stay-at-home mom to three kids, she knows how important it is to make every dollar work as hard as she does. Couponing has helped to stretch her grocery budget, and with the current food inflation putting pressure on many households, she is happy to share her top tips with the community.

RAWQ Card Fundraiser

During the pandemic, a number of adjustments were made to the daily life at the Regional Association of West Quebecers. While we met these challenges as they occurred, it was not possible to hold some of our traditional fundraisers and events. Three years ago, we opted for a "COVID friendly" fundraiser in the sale of greetings cards.
These cards were from photos submitted of scenes from the Outaouais and we were pleased to offer the printing contract to a local business. After only a few submissions of photos in the first year, we had over 100 submissions in 2022.
Unfortunately, due to the closure of the offices during the 3-year period, as well as not being able to hold our usual events, sales have not been as high as expected and we still have an inventory of cards for sale. We have been selling them at $20 per package of 10, although individual cards may be purchased for $3.00 each. There are several scenes from which to choose. The cards either have a "Merry Christmas" or "Season's Greetings" inscription or are blank. The blank ones are ideal for many other occasions throughout the year.
We are asking RAWQ members to please support this initiative by buying one or more packages. If anyone is willing to sell on behalf of RAWQ, even better. The cards are currently available at either our Aylmer office (181, rue Principale Unit A-11) or our Shawville office (111 Victoria Avenue). Cards can be shipped to you for a fee of $4.00. We can accept cash, cheque, and e-transfer.

Writing for the Artistic Practice - Workshop Series

Biographies, artistic statements, cold emails, calls for submissions, and grants. Any artistic practice will require you to write in some form or another! This workshop will look at the craft of writing through theoretical and practical lenses and will provide you with the insight and tools needed to enhance your confidence and effectiveness as a writer!
Part One: Theory and Education (Online Workshop): Thursday, March 16 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM)
(zoom link will be provided prior to the start time of the workshop)
To develop and enhance the skills needed to become an effective writer, it is first important to work to understand this skill set as a whole, while providing practical tips and tangible examples!
Part Two: Let’s Write (In-Person Workshop): Thursday, March 23 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM)

Guy Rex Rodgers, Screenwriter of What We Choose to Remember, will join us on Thursday, February 9th at 10:00 am for our Coffee Chats. Join the conversation!
Guy Rex Rodgers is a screenwriter and graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada. He has worked extensively on multimedia productions in Canada, Europe and the USA and has also worked in documentary television as a writer and interviewer.
In 2020, on the 50th anniversary of Québec’s FLQ crisis, Guy Rex Rodgers began writing and directing a series of documentaries to examine the evolving sense of identity and belonging in Quebec’s minority English-speaking communities, interviewing dozens of Quebecers in six groups based upon waves of immigration.
His feature-length documentary entitled What We Choose to Remember opened the Hudson Film festival in May 2022, produced with the National Film Board’s Filmmaker’s Assistance Program. The film has been invited to screenings in every region of Quebec, each session followed by a conversation with the audience about identity and belonging in Quebec.

Linda Sparks, Facilitator of the Gatineau Anglophone Writing Group and Mike Mason, co-manager of Librairie Michabou/La Maison Anglaise (Gatineau) will join us on Thursday, February 2nd at 10:00 am for our Coffee Chats. Join the conversation!
Linda Sparks started her journalism career writing articles for the Aylmer Bulletin and the West Quebec Post, including her own weekly column entitled the Faces of West Quebec, which won second place in the reader's poll as the most read column. Linda has also written several articles for the Internet, before taking scriptwriting and production courses. She has written several full-length feature films and stage plays and worked in the film industry as a location scout. One of her more memorable experiences was working on the Rolling Stones video shoot for the song Streets of Love. Linda was also a production coordinator for a movie of the week entitled Crossing Nirvana that was televised on cable television. A Pair of Brothers is her first complete manuscript for middle-grade readers ages 8-12 years old. Linda started the Gatineau Anglophone Writing Group, which she now helps facilitate.
Mike Mason began working in the book business in July 1976, as a part time employee of W. H. Smith on Sparks Street in Ottawa. After graduating from Carleton University in 1981 he became full time and quickly moved from store to store in the National Capital Region, ultimately managing W.H. Smith stores (which became Smithbooks) in Place du Centre, Hull; Rideau Centre, Ottawa (the 2nd or 3rd largest in sales in Canada); and finally the store in the St. Laurent Shopping Centre, Ottawa. At this point Chapters was born in 1994, out of the merger of Smithbooks and Coles, and Mike was given a package. After a year off Mike became a sales rep for Stoddart Publishing for 3 1/2 years, then a rep for McClelland and Stewart for 3 1/2 years and then a rep for HarperCollins Canada for almost 20 years. Mike retired as a rep at the end of 2021. In October 2022 Mike’s friend Guy Dubois, with whom he had been looking to work together, bought Librairie Michabou. Mike is now co-manager of Librairie Michabou/La Maison Anglaise (Gatineau).
French Sing-Along Activities

We have partnered with Canadian Parents for French - Québec & Nunavut, Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary School- CLC, Eardley Elementary School, and Chelsea Home & School Association to host French Sing-Along activities.
This initiative is specifically designed for French learners and will be presented both in English and in français facile.
This community learning will provide:
•An opportunity to learn new vocabulary and practice French in a safe environment,
•Free snacks,
•A chance to win door prizes, and
•Music to feed your soul!
Target age group: This workshop is specifically tailored for families with children aged 7-13, however older and younger youth can also participate and adults are expected to join in too!

We will then share feedback in a safe and positive atmosphere while enjoying each other's company and making new friends.
The group will meet on Tuesday, February 7th from 2:00 pm-4:00 pm!

Riley Dalys-Fine is currently the Director of Community Engagement and Strategic Alliances at the Quebec Community Groups Network (QCGN), where he has worked for just over two years. The QCGN is a centre of evidence-based expertise and collective action, which identifies, explores and addresses strategic issues affecting the development and vitality of the English-speaking community of Quebec. In his role as Director, Riley oversees the work of the organization to enhance the vitality and resiliency of the English-speaking communities in Quebec by developing and strengthening networks through dialogue, capacity building, partnering and joint action. During his time at the QCGN, Riley has helped to establish the Community Vitality Roundtables, which regroup organizations serving the community to create strategies for collective action, and has mobilized the community sector to address challenges to its development. Prior to his involvement with the QCGN, Riley worked for a number of non-profit organizations in the greater Montreal area, as well as serving on a number of boards. His background is in Social Work and Sociology. Riley currently resides in the Laurentian region with his family.

We’re all Storytellers: Learning the Craft of True Life Storytelling Workshop Series

The Regional Association of West Quebecers is pleased to partner with the Quebec Writers' Federation's StoryScaping project to offer a 3-part workshop series, We’re all Storytellers: Learning the Craft of True Life Storytelling, with Nisha Coleman. Join us on Tuesdays, December 6, 13, & 20 from 6:30-8:30 pm. Free virtual series! All are welcome.
This dynamic online workshop aims to reconnect the participants with their natural storytelling selves. Participants get to know each other and understand quickly that they are already storytellers. With a segment on story structures, building tension, layered meanings, scenes, sensory details, and beginnings and endings, participants begin to conceptualize the story they want to tell by the end of the class and gain valuable insight by working in pairs and small groups. An additional segment on performance techniques equips them not only for their final “performance” but to be a better communicator in their lives at home, school, or work. Nisha will record video of all who are willing, providing them with a lasting souvenir of the workshop.
The workshop dynamic is supportive, safe, and welcoming, allowing participants to be vulnerable, open, and honest
Nisha Coleman is a writer of fiction and memoir and an award-winning storyteller. Her memoir, Busker: Stories from the Streets of Paris, was released in 2016 by Radiant Press and was chosen as one of the 2016 Best Books of the Year by Pickle Me This. Her stories have been broadcast on The Moth Radio Hour, Risk, PBS, and CBC. Her solo storytelling show, Self-Exile, was featured at the Centaur Theatre for the 2017 Wildside Festival and won the 2016 Montreal Best of Fringe as well as the Sarasolo Festival Award of Excellence.

Her stories have been broadcast on The Moth Radio Hour, Risk, PBS, and CBC. Her solo storytelling show, Self-Exile, was featured at the Centaur Theatre for the 2017 Wildside Festival and won the 2016 Montreal Best of Fringe as well as the Sarasolo Festival Award of Excellence.

Guided Tour “ Discovering Bellevue Cemetery the burial place of Aylmer's English-speaking pioneers ”
Date: Saturday, September 10, 2022, at 10 a.m. in English and 2 p.m. in French

Departure: at the entrance to the cemetery, 1030 Aylmer Road, Gatineau
Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes **in case of rain the tour is cancelled**
The Bellevue Protestant Cemetery, created in 1822, is, along with the St. James Cemetery, the oldest European cemetery in Gatineau. It is the burial place of the founder of Aylmer and his family, Charles Symmes, the English-speaking pioneers of the area and several mayors of Aylmer. It is also the burial place of prominent 19th-century figures such as the only wood baroness in the Outaouais, Mary McConnell, and one of the most controversial figures of his time, Peter Aylen, the "King of the Shiners. Come and learn about the history of the cemetery, cited heritage in 2021, its beautiful burial monuments in a bucolic setting and its connection to Christ Church Parish in Aylmer."

Dear Members, Partners, Colleagues and Friends,
I am writing to inform you that I have stepped down from my position as Executive Director of the Regional Association of West Quebecers - my last day at RAWQ was April 1, 2022.
For the past three years, I have had a wonderful opportunity to work for RAWQ, helping it to continue its service to the English-speaking community of the Outaouais. This past year I was privileged to lead this excellent organization. It has been an honour to be part of such an excellent team and work with a committed Board of Directors. I have learned a great deal from their mentorship and have enjoyed the support of so many throughout Quebec, I am truly humbled.
To our members, funders and partners - I thank you for your guidance, support and trust in me. I look forward to working with you in other areas of the English-speaking community.
Hayley Campbell, our Community Outreach Officer will be continuing RAWQ operations and the process of recruitment of a new Executive Director has begun. RAWQ expects to continue to serve the community at full capacity and looks forward to continuing its work.

Tiffany-Lee Norris Parent was born in Gatineau, where she currently lives. She always wanted to make a positive impact on her community. Coming from a family where community involvement is deeply rooted in their identity, she was always encouraged to help the people around her.
This early involvement also opened her eyes to many challenges and injustices throughout society, such as the low proportion of women in politics, the issues about racism and discrimination, and the growing cynicism of many people towards politics. Those are some of the issues that she wants to address during her political term.
Since November 2021, Ms. Norris Parent is the city councillor of the district of Touraine, for the city of Gatineau. While she exercises her duties as city councillor, she is also continuing her studies at Athabasca University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Political Sciences. Following her election, Ms. Norris Parent was nominated to multiple positions across the committees and commissions of the City of Gatineau. She is President of the Living-Together and Immigration Consultation Table, Co-President of the Youth Commission, and member of the Recreation, Sports and, Community Development Commission.

Zainab Al-Mehdar is a reporter at The Equity. She is a recent graduate of Algonquin College’s journalism program. She also completed a bachelor's degree in Communications at the University of Ottawa. She has tried her hand in the digital marketing and communications world but always gravitated towards writing. One of the things she loves about journalism is learning something new about people and places. And with a community paper, she gets to report on so many different issues and topics which have helped her grow her portfolio. One of her favourite memories from her undergrad was meeting Rosemary Barton while on a tour of CBC offices.
She currently has bylines in The Hill Times, Glue Magazine, Algonquin Times, The Fulcrum, Maclean's and Ottawa Show Box.
Originally from Barrie ON, Stuart Benson attended Barrie Central Collegiate High School. While attending, he was a member of the rugby program, Classics Club, theatre department, as well as first baritone saxophone for the Sr. Band and Jazz Band.
Stuart moved to Ottawa in 2010 to attend the University of Ottawa where he received a Bachelor of Arts focusing on classical literature and cultures. After graduating, he worked in a number of restaurants before returning to school to pursue journalism at Algonquin College.
During his journalism program at Algonquin, he was a reporter for the school's newspaper and wrote for its magazine Glue, serving as Entertainment editor for both, which gave him the opportunity to interview some of his favourite Canadian performers, including Kenny and Spenny, USS, and The Fast Romantics.
Stuart was also one of three contributing reporters who worked on a year-long investigative report examining Algonquin College’s failed Jazan campus in Saudi Arabia.
Shortly after graduating in 2020, he found his position as a reporter for The Low Down to Hull and Back newspaper, beginning work on Feb. 12, a month and a day before the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Stuart is interested in political, health, and human interest reporting, as well as breaking news and live reporting events.
Caleb Nickerson has been a community journalist in the Pontiac area for nearly six years. He is from the town of Brighton, Ontario, and moved to Ottawa for school, where he completed a four-year joint journalism program at the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College.
During his final semester of college, he completed a 6-week work placement at The Equity newspaper in Shawville and was offered a job following graduation. Caleb moved to Shawville in August 2016 and has lived there ever since.
While Caleb began as a reporter, he started taking on some editing duties about 2 months after he started, and fully took on the editor role in March 2019.
Caleb decided to move to radio journalism in the summer of 2021, nearly five years to the day that he started at The Equity and he started at CHIP 101.9, Pontiac's community radio station in Fort Coulonge in mid-July 2021. He had known the manager there for some time through his role at the paper and thought it was the right time in his career to learn some new skills and improve his French. Currently, he writes and translates news stories for their website, as well as conducts interviews for the air and records the local news bulletin for their afternoon programming. Caleb shared that it's quite a change of pace, but it's been a great experience thus far.
Free Tax Clinic

Do you need help with your tax return? You may be eligible for help at our free tax clinic if you have a modest income and a simple tax situation.
The Regional Association of West Quebecers is a community partner with the Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program. The program aids people who are unable to complete their tax returns and cannot afford the services of tax professionals. Our team of volunteers will complete your income tax returns for free. Our tax clinic will run from March 14th to March 24th from 9:00am-4:30pm, through our Gatineau office.
To be eligible for the program, individuals must have a modest income and a simple tax situation.
Individuals assisted by the program include: adults 65 years and older, Indigenous Peoples, modest-income individuals, newcomers, persons with disabilities, and students.
In general, a tax situation is simple if an individual has no income or if their income comes from these sources: employment, pension, benefits, such as Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, disability insurance, employment insurance, and social assistance, Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), support payments, scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, or grants, and interest (under $1,000)
Suggested income limits:
-Person living alone: $35,000
-Couple: $45,000
-Each dependant: $2,500
-One adult with one child: $45,000
-Each additional dependant: $2,500

Robert Therriault (YES Business Coach) became involved with YES Montreal as a volunteer mentor and joined YES full-time as a business coach in 2014. As an experienced financial professional, he has been involved in a number of different companies from start-ups to publicly-traded. He has lived and worked in Toronto, Vancouver, New York City, Washington DC, and Ottawa before settling in Montreal. Prior to joining YES Employment + Entrepreneurship, he was involved with a fund investing in new companies in Montreal. He was also involved with a green energy trading and transmission start-up. He was the CFO of a publicly listed junior mining company. He also co-founded an investment fund as well as being a corporate banker and has done some merchant banking. Bob has an MBA from McGill and a CPA CMA designation, as well as having successfully completed level 1 of the CFA program. Bob truly enjoys working with entrepreneurs of all stages, helping them tackle issues such as business plans, cash flow management, marketing, expansion plans and focusing on what are the important issues. Entrepreneurship is both challenging and rewarding, and he aims to find ways to help support individuals launching or managing their business.
Yoana Turnin (Provincial Projects Manager) joined YES Employment + Entrepreneurship in 2017 and is currently the Provincial Projects Manager. Originally from Bulgaria, she completed an Honors Communication Studies Degree at Ithaca College in Upstate New York. Yoana has worked in the non-profit, media, and labour sectors as an advocate, facilitator, and organizer. She continues to build upon these experiences and successfully completed her MBA in June 2020. Yoana draws energy and inspiration from working with YES’ Partners across Quebec and helping new and established entrepreneurs achieve their goals.

Paul Brown, born in Ottawa, ON has been a resident of La Pêche since 2008. Paul has been a social justice advocate for many years and is dedicated to community development. Currently, as Executive Director of the 100 Mile Arts Network, Paul focuses his energy on supporting artists in the Outaouais.
Paul is a founder and President of Bearing Witness Canada a not-for-profit that he started in response to the TRC commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Paul joined the RAWQ Board in 2021. His other interests include gardening, studying nature, walking and knitting, a skill he learned as a child.

Write Your Story With Comics! with Kate Lavut

The Regional Association of West Quebecers is pleased to partner with the Quebec Writers' Federation's StoryScaping project to offer a 3-part workshop series, Write Your Story With Comics!, with Kate Lavut.
This series is open to youth and seniors and will take place on Thursdays, February 10, 17, and 24, from 7:00-9:00 pm. Sessions will take place via Zoom and the meeting information will be shared leading up to the workshops.
You don't need to be an artist to enjoy this comic-making workshop for youth and seniors. All you need is a story you want to tell and the courage to put it down on paper. Drawings can be formal and detailed or simple and expressive.
By the end of the workshop, each participant will have their own eight-page comic book!

Linda Sparks started her journalism career writing articles for the Aylmer Bulletin and the West Quebec Post, including her own weekly column entitled the Faces of West Quebec, which won second place in the reader's poll as the most read column. Linda has also written several articles for the Internet, before taking scriptwriting and production courses. She has written several full-length feature films and stage plays and worked in the film industry as a location scout. One of her more memorable experiences was working on the Rolling Stones video shoot for the song Streets of Love. Linda was also a production coordinator for a movie of the week entitled Crossing Nirvana that was televised on cable television. A Pair of Brothers is her first complete manuscript for middle-grade readers ages 8-12 years old.
Jacob Lavigne was born and raised in the Pontiac region, more specifically Otter Lake. He graduated High School from ESSC in Fort-Coulonge in 2015 and got his college diploma from Algonquin College in Television Broadcasting in 2019. Jacob has worked for CHIP 101.9, the community radio station in the Pontiac, since September 2019 and has done many projects since including videos and interviews

Not bad for an 83-cent ticket! She was delighted to take delivery of the prize from Bob Valcov, Vice-President of RAWQ. André Fortin is married to Marlene Floyd and is the father of two wonderful girls Maëlle and Élodie. He obtained his Diploma of College Studies in Social Sciences at the Cégep du Vieux-Montréal and Bachelor's Degree in Commerce with the option in Public Management at the University of Ottawa. After obtaining his Bachelor's Degree, André became the Press Secretary at the office of the federal Minister of Transport before becoming the Media Relations Officer at the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada. In 2006, André became the Press Secretary at the office of the Leader of the Official Opposition. In 2007, André went on to become the Director of Public Affairs at the Brewers Association of Canada. While working at the Brewers Association, André went back to university in order to obtain his Master’s Degree in Business Administration at the University of Ottawa. In 2013, he went on to become the Director of Government Relations at Telus and for a year until he was elected as the Member of National Assembly for Pontiac. During his first years as an MNA, André was a member of multiple committees and was a Parliamentary Assistant for the Minister of Finance. In 2017, André became Minister of Transport, Sustainable Mobility and Transport Electrification. Since 2020, André has been a member of the subcommittee on Parliamentary Reform, a member of the Committee on the National Assembly and an Official Opposition House Leader. This year, André was named the Official Opposition Critic for Transport and is now a member of the Committee on Transportation and the Environment.

The Aylmer Community Theatre Company is set to host a live radio play, "It's A Wonderful Life" on December 18th at 7:30 pm. The event will take place at the Aylmer United Church. Proof of vaccination is required.
It is a fundraiser for the Company and tickets are $20. ACT has teamed up with Broadway on Demand to be able to offer the option to view the performance ‘at home’.

Greg is an apple farmer, the owner of Coronation Hall Cider Mills, and the manager of Continuing Education for Cégep Heritage College. He's also involved in his local community as a councillor for the municipality of Bristol and as a commissioner for the Western Quebec School Board. As the president of the Pontiac Community Players, he has been active as a playwright, director, and actor in the local community theatre group. Right now he's working on a live radio play for Christmas - a cherished tradition in the churches here in the Pontiac.

Krishnan Sundaram began working as the Outreach Coordinator with WQLC in January, 2019. Presently he is doing outreach work as well as developing, coordinating, and delivering programs to the English speaking population of the Western Quebec Region. While coordinating and training volunteer tutors, and matching them with learners wanting to improve language and mathematics skills, he is runnung programs to help seniors and those who need it, help in improving digital literacy and computer skills. Periodically, he creates and leads activities for the whole family to participate in and learn together.
With specialization in leadership and facilitation, Krish uses his skills as a musician by incorporating music into language learning with activities such as songwriting, and hand drumming. “I believe that participating in activities that use creativity can inspire people to want to learn.” Krish has a diverse work history which includes working as an activity leader and coordinator for an international school in Ottawa, a daycare center cook, purchasing and logistics specialist, and a live sound technician.
Having lived for many years in Montreal and Vancouver, Krish has called Aylmer home since 2011.

Greg is the Member of Parliament for Hull–Aylmer since October 2015. Founder and chair of the Canadian Caucus of Black Parliamentarians, Greg also serves as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and to the Minister of Digital Government, and is vice-chair of the Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association. He was previously Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and a member of the standing Committee on Finance.
Greg is very involved in his community. He encourages people to invest themselves in causes that are important to them, and to work together to fight isolation and create a sense of community. It’s why he organizes café croissant meetings, public forums and other public events in the Hull–Aylmer riding.
Greg has a strong background in politics. Previously, he worked as a policy advisor and senior policy advisor in a number of ministerial offices. He has also worked at all levels of the Liberal Party of Canada, including as National Director, where he introduced change and innovation that made the party more efficient, helping restore it to today’s modern appeal.
Greg has two bachelor’s degrees—one in social science and one in international relations. He has also studied international relations at the master’s level. Over the past 25 years, he has worked in the private and public sectors, with not-for-profit organizations and in the academic sector.
He is passionate about running, politics and jazz, and he is proud of his community and everything it has accomplished. He and his wife are the proud parents of three adult children and doting grandparents to one grandson.

She also enjoys being an active participant in several consultation tables in the Outaouais region, which allows her to learn more about the needs of families in the region and to work towards providing much-needed services and activities for the English-speaking community. Recently, Sarah has been working closely with a number of partners to launch this year’s first Early Childhood Forum for families and their little ones.

The Priority-Setting Summit Project is an event organized by Y4Y Quebec. The primary goal of this project is to mobilize and increase civic engagement among Québec’s English-speaking youth while providing them with the tools necessary to develop strong leadership skills for the future.
This will be accomplished by giving English-speaking youth an accessible platform to share their concerns, exchange knowledge and ideas, identify the core needs of their community and set priorities for the future.
The two-day Priority-Setting Summit event will be held to provide youth with learning opportunities via educational workshops, special guest speakers, youth leadership training, mentorship, and networking activities with 5 à 7 cocktail formula at Dawson College on November 13-14, 2021.
Youth participants attending the Summit will be divided into 6 teams to work on the elaboration of Strategic Plans based on the 6 key issues identified by the Project's Youth Advisory Committee (Education, Civic Engagement, Professional Abilities, Diversity & Inclusion, Professional Development and Employment Concerns).
This will help build the main goal of PSSP which is to develop a 5-year Strategic Plan to positively impact outcomes for English-speaking youth that will be presented to the Government.

Then it's time to sign up for the Cercle des écrivaines/écrivains de l'Outaouais Writer's Circle in partnership with the Regional Association of West Quebecers and the City of Gatineau. The city has in place Public Health guidelines and government directives regarding distancing, mask wearing and other public safety measures for both staff and participants of the Donalda-Charron library in the Plateau sector.
Come and discover your writing style while receiving feedback about your fiction or non-fiction story, share your short stories and poetry while exploring a wide range of subjects in a friendly atmosphere. Various genres of writing will be explored. All you have to do is put your thoughts down on paper and register for FREE by using your Accès Gatineau card, which is required to register for one writing circle during the week from the three time slots available. The writing circles will take place on ** Wednesdays from 6:30pm-8:30pm **. Unleashing the imagination – Are we trained to use our imagination…or is it neglected?
Join us for a 4-part workshop series, 'In Your Own Voice, In Your Own Words', on September 21& 28 and October 5 & 12 from 3:30-5:30 pm.
Whether recounting a love story or an adventure, a true-life story or one that’s totally imagined, the participants will be free to improvise and adapt as they are guided through the creative process of bringing a story to life and telling it in their Own Voice and their Own Words.
Patti Warnock will lead the series. Her repertoire (for the young at heart of all ages) consists not only of traditional style tales, but also of her own creations, where reality and fiction walk hand in hand, and which are based on the reality of everyday life events, and on her own childhood in rural Quebec and in northern Canada.

Calling all youth! We have created a new needs assessment for youth and we need your input. With the information received, we will generate a report on the needs of the youth in our region. We are hoping to gain a better sense of how to reach you amid the pandemic. Please share this with local youth in your network.
FSL Update: Winter 2021 Session

French Second Language Classes will be returning for a Winter session in January 2021! RAWQ will hold a 10-week session from January 11th to March 18th, 2021. Classes will be held virtually due to COVID-19 precautions and will take place in the evening at either 6:30 pm-7:30 pm or 7:30 pm-8:30 pm. Instruction is offered at the beginner, high beginner, intermediate and conversation-focused levels. Open registration will be from December 7th through to December 15th. Current students eligible for pre-registration or those on the waitlist will be contacted directly by the FSL coordinator.

Spoken word—Spoken Ancestries with Dona Nham

We are pleased to partner with the Quebec Writers' Federation's StoryScaping project to offer a 3-part workshop series, Spoken Word- Spoken Ancestries with Dona Nham.
This series is open to youth and seniors and will take place on October 13, 20, & 20 from 6:00-8:00pm.
Spaces are limited for this virtual series. Register by emailing oec@westquebecers.ca.
Workshop description: Spoken Ancestries is an online spoken word workshop that will take participants on an introspective journey of the Self. Where do we come from? Who do we come from? What stories do we hold? Our own personal histories and lineages will be the inspiration for building a deeper language to ourselves and relationship to our roots. Participants will be guided through a series of collective and individual activities that will investigate, explore, and celebrate the mysteries and truths that only they can tell. Elements of spoken word, performance, and play will be explored in the activities. At the end, participants will share their pieces as an intimate showcase.
Workshop leader bio: Xin chào! Dona Nham is a Vietnamese-Chinese femme born and raised in Treaty 6 (Edmonton) and has been living in Tio’tia:ke (Montreal) since 2009. She is a spoken-word artist, arts-based facilitator, community organizer and cultural worker. Her practice is inspired by regenerative patterns within nature, the exploration of her ancestry and liminality, stories of resilience and diaspora, and the expansive and evolving work of what it means to decolonize, to heal, to love, and to seek truth, even in the darkest of places.

RAWQ Reopening Message

Dear Members and Constituents,
The past few months has been a tumultuous time for all, including the Regional Association of West Quebecers. The majority of our activities requiring some degree of personal interaction, the Association decided to suspend operations and lay off all staff on April 1st.
We are relieved and proud to announce the recommencement of operations effective July 27th. Rest assured, significant health and safety precautions will be undertaken to ensure control of the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus in congruence with public health and safety measures. Among others, the Association offices will be reconfigured to maximize social distancing and our celebrated French Second Language courses will be run online.
Please stay tuned for more announcements. We look forward to serving you once again in the very near future.

Message du conseil d’administration de l’ARWQ sur COVID-19

Mesdames et messieurs de l’Association,
La présente situation concernant le virus COVID-19 a nécessité des changements rapides et dramatiques dans nos vies. L’Association régionale des West Quebecers traite de ce dossier avec beaucoup de sérieux et sachez que nous prenons toutes les mesures et dispositions nécessaires pour assurer la santé et la sécurité de nos membres, nos étudiants et le personnel de l’ARWQ.
Afin de se conformer aux directives du Ministère de la santé publique, débutant
le 16 mars 2020, toutes les activités organisées par l’ARWQ sont reportées jusqu’à nouvel ordre.
Les événements et activités suivantes sont reportées :
- Les ateliers du Club de conversation en français à la Résidence l’Initial;
- Tous les cours de français langue seconde à Aylmer et Wakefield;
- La soirée « Quiz Night » du 20 mars, 2020;
- La session d’information sur les impôts 2019 qui devait être tenue à Shawville le 24 mars à la librairie Clarendon;
- Les bureaux de l’ARWQ d’Aylmer et de Shawville seront fermés.
Nous sommes certains que vous aussi concernés que nous pour la santé et le bien-être de la communauté, et que vous comprendrez les raisons qui motivent l’ARWQ et les autres organisations d’errer prudemment. Tenez-vous à l’affut des derniers développements en consultant notre site Web ou notre page Facebook.
Nous réitérons les conseils des instances publiques et vous invitons à prendre toutes les précautions pour sauvegarder la santé de tous vos proches.

Spring Session of French Second Language Courses

Back by popular demand, RAWQ will be organizing FSL classes for the Spring. The classes will take place in Aylmer and Wakefield from April 14th to June 16th, a total of 10 weeks for a cost of $110. Classes are currently being offered at the Beginner, Advanced Beginner and Intermediate levels. If you are interested in participating in the Spring session, please contact Jeanne at fsl@westquebecers.ca or at 819-682-9602.

Lynn Bennett, Certified Financial Planner, gives an overview of 2019 provisions of federal and provincial income tax, particularly pertaining to seniors, and much more.
We have partnered with the Municipality of Shawville and Atwater Library and Computer Centre.

REPRISE DES COURS DE FRANÇAIS, LANGUE SECONDE EN OUTAOUAIS

L’Association régionale des West Quebecers est fière d’annoncer la reprise des cours de français, langue seconde en Outaouais ! Ces cours au coût de 70$ afin de couvrir les frais de l’instruction auront lieu soit à Aylmer, soit à Wakefield. Ces cours seront dispensés du 4 février au 7 avril, 2020 pour un total de huit semaines. Les classes durent 90 minutes chacune entre 18 h et 21 h. Nous offrons présentement trois niveaux d’instruction : A1- débutant, A2- débutant avancé et A3- intermédiaire.

CLASSES DE CONVERSATION EN FRANÇAIS À AYLMER

L’Association régionale des West Quebecers organise un club de conversation les lundis soirs, en partenariat avec la Résidence L’Initial à Aylmer.
Le Club fait emphase sur l’amélioration de l’écoute et de la compréhension de la communication verbale en français. Nous proposons des invités spéciaux de la région à parer de sujets d’intérêts ou de stimuler une conversation de groupe. À date, nous avons reçu des personnalités tel que Rick Henderson, Micheline Lemieux, le Député provincial André Fortin et la conseillère municipale Audrey Bureau pour ne nommer que ceux-là. Le frais d’adhésion à ce club se fait au coût de 65 $ et les rencontres ont lieu à l’Initial une fois par semaine du 20 janvier au 25 mai.

Suspension of French Second-language Courses

Dear Students of the RAWQ FSL Courses,
It is with great regret that I inform you that the Regional Association of West Quebecers is postponing the next session of our French second-language courses, which was to take place this winter. Due to unforeseen budgetary constraints, we are unable to hold the session.
We will resume the courses as soon as possible; however we do not anticipate that that will be before the autumn of 2020. Student information will be kept, including the information of those who had registered for the cancelled session. We will ensure that they have priority when the courses resume. Should there be any further change in the status of the Program, the Association will notify you all.
Thank you for your participation thus far, and for your patience and understanding going forward. We look forward to seeing you in the fall of 2020.
